Help Your Pet Stay Calm this Fourth of July

With July 4th coming up, preparation is your next best solution for pet anxiety:

- For dogs, be sure to exercise your pooch before any party whether you stay at home or leave. A tired pup from lots of play and a good long walk is less likely to become stressed. Be ready for a mid-party walk/play session to ensure your pup has a chance to relieve himself and get away from the noise for a bit.

- If you're entertaining guests at home and expect a lot of excitement, be sure that your pets have a calm, quiet place to go to if they feel overwhelmed. Cats especially require a comfortable area to retire, away from noise and attention.

- Feed your afternoon/evening meals before guests arrive/you depart and give your pet plenty of time to let their dinner settle before the excitement begins. Be sure to provide water wherever your pet may end up, as stressed dogs or cats may not leave their comfort zones to drink near guests.

- Have your supplements/calming aids ready to use. Some calming supplements require or recommend dosing up to an hour before the event, and administering multiple doses throughout. If using one, be sure to read the directions so you're prepare to use it properly for the best effectiveness. See below for several calming aids available at our store.

- Be aware of the signs of an over-stressed animal: pacing, heavy panting, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive whining/howling, trembling, restlessness. In many cases, separating the animal from the noise will help, but just in case have the number for a local vet's office (check to be sure they're open during the holiday) handy should the situation become serious.
